If you have a shower curtain, then you have a shower curtain liner—or at least, you probably should. While a shower curtain is often more decorative, a shower curtain liner is used to help keep water both in the tub and from soaking the curtain itself.

While hard surfaces are easy to spray and wipe, shower curtain liners can be a trickier thing to clean. Sometimes, it’s best to simply ditch the whole thing and start fresh.

So, how do you know when it’s a lost cause and officially time to replace your liner? We tapped in a few cleaning pros to find out. 

How Do You Know It's Time to Replace a Shower Liner?

As mold and air quality expert Michael Rubino explains, a shower curtain liner acts as a necessary barrier between the tub or shower and the rest of the bathroom. 

“Reducing moisture is key to preventing contamination issues like microbial growth,” he says. “Some species of mold can grow in as little as 24-48 hours given a wet surface, so this is a pretty important aspect in a bathroom.”

But for as necessary as they are, anyone with a shower curtain liner knows that thanks to their function, they’re also prone to getting kind of grimy. For this reason, curtain liners should be regularly replaced every six to 12 months.
