What Mold Is, Where It Is, and How to Heal

Michael Rubino sat down with Ashley Stahl on her podcast, You Turn, to discuss mold, mold illness, and the importance of a healthy home environment.

In this podcast episode, Michael discusses how he got into the mold and indoor air quality industry. After growing up in the construction industry, he was well aware of how building practices work but started to get concerned when he continued to see individuals feeling ill after remediation projects. This ongoing experience triggered his curiosity as to why this phenomenon kept happening. From there, he realized there was a real issue with the remediation industry at large.

Ashley and Michael discuss how easily a home can develop a mold problem and the general lack of knowledge in society when it comes to this indoor contaminant. Michael explains what mold is, how it starts to grow in a home, and why the contamination issue can spiral out of control. Understanding this highlights how remediation projects have failed so frequently over the years and what actions are needed to ensure someone’s indoor environment is safe.

Michael also goes through various steps a homeowner or renter can take to avoid mold growth. The best way to avoid mold exposure is to prevent growth from happening in the first place. It’s also a good idea to hire qualified mold inspectors before buying a house to determine if there’s a mold issue within a home.

Another issue with mold is regulations and how they don’t always protect residents from exposure, especially renters. Oftentimes, the landlord or management company will attempt to tackle the issue themselves or go with the cheaper route, which rarely addresses the problem correctly.

Mold doesn’t just exist in the home, though. Ashley and Michael chat about popular foods that contain mold spores and particles as well as mycotoxins. As Michael explains, some species of mold release these microscopic spores, which are naturally toxic to the human body. When an individual is concerned about mold, this information is a good thing to keep in mind and be aware of.

When it comes to mold illness, Michael goes through how individuals can test their bodies for mold and what a lot of the symptoms of exposure are. Detoxifying is incredibly important when it comes to mold toxicity, so it’s also important to find someone who can help do this process properly. Not all doctors are well-versed in mold illness. Ashley and Michae also chat about how mold impacts health and the things individuals should do to ensure their home environments are safe.
