Troubleshooting
Something not behaving? Pick what’s happening below and we’ll walk you through it. Most fixes take a minute or two.
Four Quick Checks
Most Guardian hiccups come down to one of these. Run through them first. You may not need to go any further.
It’s On Power
Guardian runs on its USB-C adapter or Power over Ethernet. The battery is a short backup only, so keep it plugged in.
Wi-Fi Is Switched On
Wi-Fi is off out of the box. Open Settings, Internet, Wi-Fi and toggle it on.
Within Router Range
A weak signal is the most common cause of dropouts. Move Guardian closer, or cut down the walls in between.
Date & Time Are Set
In Settings, set your location and date/time. An accurate clock keeps data reporting correct.
What’s Happening?
Tap the one that sounds like you. Each opens a short set of steps. Work down the list and stop when it’s sorted.
- Make sure it’s connected to power, either the USB-C adapter or a Power over Ethernet port. The battery inside is a short emergency backup, not meant to run Guardian on its own, so it needs to stay plugged in.
- Just plugged it in? Give it a minute to start up. It’s normal to see the logo flash or the screen go dark during the first boot. Don’t unplug it or change settings mid-cycle.
- Try a different outlet, or an adapter and cable you know work.
- From the home screen, swipe down from the top and tap the gear to open Settings.
- Scroll to the Internet section and tap Wi-Fi.
- Toggle Wi-Fi on. It’s off by default, which is the most common reason setup stalls.
- Pick your network from the list.
- Enter your Wi-Fi password and tap Connect in the bottom right.
- Grab a standard Ethernet cable long enough to reach your router, switch, or wall port.
- Guardian has two Ethernet ports, one on the back and one on the bottom. Plug into either.
- Connect the other end to an active network port.
- Check the connection indicator in the top-right of Guardian’s screen.
- Confirm under Settings, Internet, Ethernet. You should see network details like an IP address.
- Check the connection indicator in the top-right of the screen and confirm Guardian shows connected.
- On Wi-Fi? Make sure it’s within range of your router. Distance and walls are the usual cause of dropouts.
- Confirm the date and time are set (Settings). A wrong clock can interfere with reporting.
- Restart Guardian with the power button, then check your dashboard again after a minute.
- Still nothing? Remove and re-add the connection: open Settings, Internet, then re-select your Wi-Fi network or Ethernet port.
- Swipe down from the top of the home screen to open the panel.
- Tap the gear (Settings) in the top right.
- Go to Device Details, then View Details.
- Tap Check. Guardian looks for the latest version, then follow the prompts to download and install.
More often than not, it comes down to where Guardian sits:
- Keep it at eye level, about 3 to 6 feet up, somewhere people actually spend time.
- Keep it away from windows, doors, vents, heaters, and A/C, ideally 16 feet or more from HVAC diffusers and windows that open. These push readings around.
- Leave the bottom air intake and top outlet clear, and keep Guardian upright.
- Direct sun won’t harm it, but can nudge the temperature reading.
Check sensor health under Settings, Sensors, Sensor Health. A healthy sensor reads 100%; one that’s worn out or failing reads 0%. Plan on replacing capsules every 15 to 24 months to keep readings accurate (some certifications ask for sooner).
To swap a capsule:
- Open the bottom panel at the air intake.
- Press down on the capsule to release it.
- Push a new capsule in until it clicks.
- Reattach the bottom panel.
